AUGUSTA, Maine — One woman has died following a multi-vehicle crash that shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 Friday afternoon in Augusta.
Traffic on I-95 in Augusta was stopped on the southbound side at about 3:09 p.m. Friday due to a construction zone lane closure, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.
"In the area of exit 113, where vehicles were stopped in traffic, a pickup truck rear-ended an SUV, which led to a 5-vehicle crash," the release stated.
A female passenger in the SUV that was struck was pronounced dead at the scene, Moss said. The female passenger was identified as 68-year-old Sari Ohmart of Brewer. A dog that was in the vehicle also died.
According to Moss, all other injuries sustained in the crash were not life-threatening. Other individuals who were injured were taken to Maine General Hospital in Augusta for treatment.
The five vehicles involved in the crash were towed from the scene.
At the time of the crash, the I-95 southbound lanes were closed in the area and traffic was diverted off of Exit 113. Northbound lanes were not impacted.
As of 5:50 p.m. Friday, all southbound lanes were reopened, Moss said.
Maine State Police continue to investigate.
Dostie’s Towing, the Maine State Police's Troop G, Central Field Troop, and Traffic Safety Division, the Augusta Fire Department, the Maine Department of Transportation, a Department of Homeland Security Federal Protective Service law enforcement specialist, and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection assisted at the scene.
