AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Two of Maine's top arson investigators were honored in Augusta Tuesday as part of Maine Arson Awareness Week.
Shasta and Huff are arson detection dogs. They're the only two in the state, which means they get around.
Fire Marshal Joe Thomas said these dogs can detect the difference between an accelerant and chemicals found in everyday household items - and they can do it in a fraction of the time it takes investigators.
The canines have also been able to sniff out suspects in a crowd of onlookers at the scene of a fire.
Part of Maine Arson Awareness Week is to remind the public to keep an eye out for anything suspicious because arson fires can quickly turn deadly.
