Astronaut Dr. Jessica Meir talks to hometown from space

Caribou native, Dr. Jessica Meir talks to the Caribou community about her adventures in space and encourages them to reach for the stars.

CARIBOU, Maine — Caribou native, Dr. Jessica Meir is currently on the International Space Station and Tuesday morning, students from the Caribou school district and community got the rare chance to speak to a hometown hero from space!

Meir answered questions from students as well as discuss her journey from small-town Maine, to becoming a NASA Expedition 61 flight engineer.

Her senior year at Caribou High School, Dr. Meir wrote that her future goal was "to go for a spacewalk."

Not only did she make her dream come true, but she made history doing it.

Dr. Meir was one of two astronauts that took part in first all-female spacewalk.

NASA's Office of STEM Engagement says providing the opportunity for students to connect with Meir will hopefully inspire students to study science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Caribou High School Principal Travis Barnes wants to show students and community members "they too can achieve their goals and dreams with hard work, education, and vision."

Not only are students inspired, but so is the entire community of Caribou. The city has planned a series of space-themed events. Everything from stargazing to a Lego night is scheduled.

Caribou High School students didn't have any classes all day on Tuesday. Instead, members of the community were invited to speak in workshops throughout the day.

The workshops and guest speakers were aimed to show local students that you can get there from here. Whether it be a doctor, potato farmer, a world traveler, or even an astronaut, students are being encouraged to "reach for the stars."

Dr. Meir shared during her talk what she thought of growing up in Aroostook County. She said being from the area broadened her sense of exploration and that being able to see the stars so clearly from the skies of northern Maine drew her attention to the sky.

Christina Kane-Gibson, City of Caribou Events & Marketing Director, said, "We are so proud of Dr. Meir and we want to show our support for all she has accomplished."
