Explosion that destroyed two homes in Aroostook County deemed accidental

The Office of the State Fire Marshal said the fire was accidental.

SINCLAIR, Maine — Two homes were destroyed and one person was brought to a hospital after an explosion in Aroostook County Saturday night. 

At approximately 7 p.m., investigators from the fire marshal's office responded to an explosion at a home located at 441 Shore Rd. in Sinclair, according to a news release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss. 

Moss said the homeowner of the residence where the explosion happened was present at the time and was brought to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening. 

His home was considered a total loss. 

A second home also caught fire and the homeowner of that residence was able to leave safely, Moss said. The second home was also a total loss. 

In an Aug. 15 update, Moss said the Office of the State Fire Marshal deemed the cause accidental. She said a propane line was disconnected from a heating unit that was accidentally turned on.

The following agencies assisted with the incident: North Lakes Fire and Rescue, St. Agatha Fire Department, Fort Kent Fire Department, Frenchville Fire Department, Fort Kent Ambulance Service, Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office.
