AMITY, Maine — The state fire marshal's office was called to investigate a fatal house fire in Aroostook County on Saturday, leading to the discovery of human remains in the debris.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Aroostook County Sheriff's Department called the state fire marshal's office to 44 Emily Dr. for a reported structure fire, according to a release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss.
Moss said the Houlton Fire Department found the building heavily damaged by the fire, and officials found human remains in the debris.
The human remains will be brought to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for identification, according to the release.
An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the blaze.
