FORT KENT, Maine — Fort Kent police are releasing details about an investigation into a reported shooting Wednesday in the area of Pleasant Street, where several schools are located.
Fort Kent Police Chief Michael DeLena said Thursday in a news release that an incident resulting from a "mental health related matter" unfolded late Tuesday and stretched into the early-morning hours Wednesday.
The chief said Thursday that police were able to locate where the incident originated and contact the individual. No injuries were reported in the shooting.
Department officials were granted a yellow-flag weapons restriction order, DeLena said in the release, and no charges or arrests have been made.
On Wednesday morning, police responded to a report of a gunshot heard in the area of Pleasant Street, near MSAD 27 schools and the University of Maine at Fort Kent.
The schools nearby were advised by police early Wednesday to either "cancel or delay school activity," the department shared.
MSAD 27 schools delayed their open but resumed classes by 10 a.m. after receiving clearance from local police. UMFK chose to stay closed and announced it would not reopen until Thursday.
"The canceling or delay of all three schools was a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the students and faculty until the incident was resolved," the Thursday release stated.
