Fort Kent police respond to single-vehicle crash into river

Police said the sole vehicle occupant's injuries and condition were reported as "critical."

FORT KENT, Maine — A person is in "critical" condition after a single-vehicle rollover crash into Fish River in Fort Kent Tuesday afternoon. 

At approximately 4:45 p.m., Fort Kent police responded to a single-vehicle crash off East Main Street, according to a news release from the Fort Kent Police Department. Police said a vehicle left the roadway and passed through a parking lot of an apartment building, where it "veered off a ledge, struck an embankment and rolled several times before coming to a rest in Fish River."

Fort Kent Fire and Rescue reportedly worked to recover the vehicle and its sole occupant while submerged. 

The individual was brought to Northern Maine Medical Center for treatment, then life-flighted to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Police said their "injuries and current condition of the victim was reported as critical."

The investigation is ongoing. 

The Maine Warden Service, Ambulance Service Inc., Maine State Police, U.S. Border Control, and crash reconstructionists from the Presque Isle Police Department and Aroostook County Sheriff's Office assisted the Fort Kent Police Department.
