MASARDIS, Maine — A truck driver was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after police said he crashed into a moving train in Aroostook County.
James Tapley, 26, of Monticello, was hauling woodchips in a tractor-trailer owned by Bartlett Forest Products of Amity and was "unable to stop" when he struck the train around 1 p.m. at a crossing on Route 11 in Masardis, according to Maine State Police. The impact derailed the train.
Tapley was taken to Northern Light Hospital in Presque Isle. A dog he was traveling with was taken to a local veterinarian. No one on the train was hurt, police said.
Route 11 was closed at the scene of the crash. Officials initially expected the road to remain closed for two or three days as crews cleared the wreckage, however, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Thursday morning that the road had reopened earlier than anticipated.
The crash remains under investigation.
Police provided another photo of the wreckage:
