Train derailment closes Route 11 in Ashland; road has since reopened

Officials said drivers in the area were asked to take an alternate route.

ASHLAND, Maine — Route 11 in Ashland was closed for a portion of the day Tuesday following a train derailment. The road reopened to traffic shortly before 4 p.m. 

Ashland is in Aroostook County, about 50 miles south of the US-Canada border in Fort Kent.

The train tracks intersect with Route 11 in two places. Ashland police told NEWS CENTER Maine around 2 p.m. that the Moody Siding Road intersection would reopen sooner, and the Station Street crossing would be blocked off for longer.

The Aroostook County Sheriff's Office said in a social media post shortly before 1:40 p.m. that Route 11 would be closed "for the next several hours." 

The Aroostook County Emergency Management Agency shared an update around 3:30 p.m. noting the road had since reopened. 

Police did not immediately provide information on the nature of the derailment or if there were any injuries.
