UPDATE BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — A Maine man who pleaded guilty to killing two people and wounding three others is going to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Anthony Lord was given two consecutive life sentences with no chance of parole at the Penobscot Judicial Center Monday afternoon.
Nearly a dozen family members of the victims addressed the courtroom. One was a survivor who still has a bullet in his neck from the shooting. They all stated that they have to deal with the consequences of that day for the rest of their lives so Lord should have to as well. Lord also spoke for the first time today - he apologized to the those in the courtroom, saying he can't take back what he did but he regrets it everyday. He he was diagnose with PTSD shortly after his 6 month old son died in 2015 and claims that is what set him over the edge the night of the killings.
The rampage began in July 2015 when Lord set fire to a barn, stole firearms from a Silver Ridge Township home and beat a man after tying him to a chair. He would go on to kill 58-year-old Kevin Tozier and 22-year-old Kyle Hewitt at separate locations. Lord also kidnapped Hewitt's girlfriend, 22-year-old Brittany Irish, and shot and wounded her 55-year-old mother, Kim Irish, at her home in Benedicta. Two others were wounded.
"There's not one day that has gone by that I dont think about Kyle or Kevin or anybody else," Lord said. "In any sentencing like this there is no justice -- because they can't give back what they lost."
But Kyle Hewitt's mother says his apology will never bring her son back. "There is no closure in the death of a son...there is no closure ever -- it just doesn't happen," Shelley Hewitt said. "We put one foot in front of the other and that's as much as we can do."
Lord will also have to pay back nearly $39-thousand to the families in restitution.
