ANSON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The tax collector in the town of Anson in Somerset County has been indicted on 13 counts of tax fraud related charges.
The Kennebec Journal reports that a grand jury indicted Claudia Viles on counts of theft, failure to pay Maine state income taxes, failure to make and file income tax returns and tampering with public records.
Between January of 2009 and September of 2014, Viles allegedly stole more than $10,000 from the town and failed to file income tax returns each of those years.
The indictment also states that on March 2, Viles tampered with public records by intentionally destroying, concealing or removing copies of state of Maine motor vehicle registration forms belonging to the town.
Anson town leaders have also been working with police since March on an investigation into the disappearance of more than $438,000 in excise tax from the town office.
