Androscoggin County Sheriff says he will not attend commissioners meetings in-person over lack of masks worn

The Androscoggin County Sheriff wants to meet on Zoom to protect his staff from COVID-19 after a meeting where few masks were worn.

AUBURN, Maine — The day after commissioners in Androscoggin County met to consider a resolution against wearing masks in public, the county sheriff said he and his staff will not attend future meetings in person due to the risk of contracting COVID-19.

"There's no sense to needlessly have a meeting that can be conducted otherwise and accomplish the same thing," Sheriff Eric Samson told NEWS CENTER Maine Thursday.

Samson added that his decision is not political.

"I may have different opinions about different things in regards to mandates," he said. "But we all have the responsibility to do the right thing to keep others safe."

Many people attending Wednesday's county commissioner's meeting did not wear masks.

Up for discussion was a proposal by Commissioner Isaiah Lary opposing executive orders from Gov. Janet Mills mandating face coverings in public, and limiting the size of gatherings and other restrictions. More than 20 people spoke against the mask requirement; no one spoke in favor of the mandates.

Commissioners voted 4-3 to postpone action on the resolution.

Chair of the county commissioners said since Wednesday's meeting, they are now working to implement restrictions on who can attend meetings in person as well as a way for members of the public to participate virtually.

"I understand people's frustrations," Sally Christner said. "I don't think the commissioners meeting is the right format for that action and that debate."

Another Maine county drafted a resolution against wearing masks last month.

On January 14, 2021, Piscataquis County's three commissioners drafted a 'Resolution of Protest for Piscataquis County' in response to measures taken by Governor Janet Mills during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commissioners James White, Andrew Torbett, and Wayne Erkkinen posted the resolution Thursday on the Piscataquis County Commissioners Facebook page and website.

The 'Resolution of Protest For Piscataquis County' cites concern for businesses and residents' mental health. It also shares now-debunked information about COVID-19.
