Andover man dies in snowmobile crash in Lang Township

Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, officials said.

LANG TOWNSHIP, Maine — An Andover man was killed after crashing into trees on a snowmobile trail in Lang Township.

Frank Clifford, 69, was traveling north on his 2019 Ski-Doo 850 Enduro snowmobile with some friends on snowmobile trail ITS 89 in Lang Township, which is located in northern Franklin County, when he reportedly "drifted across the center of the trail and then crashed into the woods on the left side of the trail, colliding with several small trees," Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife spokesperson Mark Latti said in a news release, Friday.

Maine game wardens, as well as the Rangeley Fire Department, responded to the scene and discovered Clifford deceased beside the trees near his crashed snowmobile, according to the release.

His body was taken out of the woods by snowmobile and then transported to Wiles Funeral Home in Farmington. There, his body will be examined by a state medical examiner, Latti said.

"The initial investigation indicates that speed appears to be a factor in the crash. Clifford was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash," the release stated.

The Maine Warden Service continues to actively investigate the crash.

No additional information was released.
