GORHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Two people were taken to a local hospital after an ammonia leak shut down the USM campus Friday evening.
Fire Chief Robert Lefebvre crews responded to the ice arena after alarms indicated an ammonia leak in the room that housed 700 lbs of the volatile chemical.
Lefebvre said upon arrival; there was a noticeable ammonia smell. Crews evacuated the campus out of an abundance of caution.
Officials said two people were transported to local hospitals for evaluation. There has been no update on their conditions.
Lefebvre said, "the system worked. It has safety valves when it goes into alarm; it isolates the leak."
