Acton man dies from severe burns following outdoor fire

The 64-year-old homeowner was severely burned on his upper body while trying to suppress the fire, officials said.

ACTON, Maine — The state fire marshal's office is investigating a fire in Acton that claimed a man's life.

Officials were called to 151 Ice Road in Acton on Nov. 17 to assist the Maine Forest Service in investigating a fire that resulted in serious injury, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a Thursday release.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it appears to have originated outdoors, the release stated. Nearby woods and a shed also sustained damage from the fire.

Officials with the Office of the State Fire Marshal found the homeowner, 64-year-old Volney Spalding, with severe burns on his upper body that he got while trying to suppress the fire.

Spalding was flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland but died Wednesday from his injuries.

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta will determine the cause and manner of Spalding's death, Moss said.

The Maine Forest Service is continuing to investigate the cause of the outdoor fire.
