KENNEBUNK (NEWS CENTER Maine) — As people hit the road after Wednesday’s Fourth of July festivities, AAA is expecting a record-breaking week for travel in Maine.
An estimated 24 million people are traveling in New England this week, according to AAA.
It is the busiest summer holiday travel forecast in 13 years.
“We're expecting a record-breaking holiday weekend travel,” AAA of Northern New England’s Dan Goodman said. “More people are traveling than ever before.”
Goodman said an increase in consumer confidence and somewhat reasonable gas prices are also contributing to the rise in people on the roads.
The busiest travel days were at the start of the week, but officials said they expect it to stay busy throughout—especially as people return home from Wednesday evening’s events on Thursday.
The Maine Turnpike Authority said it has reopened some lanes that were closed for construction to make for better traffic flow. Those lanes will remain open until Friday.
Construction on Route 3 in Bar Harbor has also been put on hold, according to Maine DOT.
