RUMFORD, Maine — A 9-year-old boy died in a high-speed car crash in Rumford Saturday afternoon, according to the Rumford Police Department.
In a Facebook post, police said the crash happened on Route 2 in Rumford around 3:13 p.m. when a Subaru Impreza driven by 42-year-old Matthew Kellogg of Hopedale, Massachusetts collided with a car driven by F. Michael Piveronas of Rumford.
Kellogg was driving with his two children. There were no other passengers in Piveronas' car.
When first responders arrived on scene, they confirmed all four people involved in the crash had sustained serious and potentially life-threatening injuries and were sent to the Rumford Hospital, the release stated.
A game warden and a nurse who was in the area of the crash at that time found the 9-year-old boy unresponsive and tried to save his life, police said. He later died at the hospital.
Kellogg is expected to be brought to a Lewiston hospital later Saturday while his 5-year-old son was sent to a Portland hospital. Police said both are suffering life-threatening injuries. There was no word on Piveronas' condition in the post.
Officials with Maine State Police, Oxford County Sheriff's Office, and Rumford Police began an investigation Saturday, and police suspect alcohol as a contributing factor in the crash.
Correction: An earlier version of this story misidentified the age of the boy who died due to incorrect information provided at the time.
