WINSLOW, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The mind of a 13-year-old works in a funny way and is often times as sporadic as most kids. Gabe Ferris however knows exactly what he wants and believe it or not it's news that he's passionate about.

Ferris was chosen from around 200 kids from all over the country to be a reporter for the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps. He'll be reporting on current events, breaking news, entertainment stories and sports events happening in Maine. The reports will be read by more than 25 million students in classrooms nationwide.

"I think it's important for children and adults, or people of any age, to know what's going on around them and to be well informed," said Ferris.

Ferris chose to write his first story about the efforts at his Waterville school to improve reading levels for kids living in poverty. His mother, Joyce Galea-Sturtevant, is extremely proud of her son's new role and hopes that he continues to have fun as a kid reporter.

"If it opens doors and he's having fun with it I couldn't be more proud," said Galea-Sturtevant.
