CAMDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- More than 400 teams of racers gathered in Camden for this years US National Toboggan Championships. A competitive event that brings out die hard racers every year from near and far.

This year a combined 425 teams made up of two, three, and four people signed up to race. The fastest runs can reach speeds as high as 45 miles per hour on the 400 foot shoot that Chairman of the event, Holly Edwards, says is the only known wooden toboggan shoot in the world.

"We've got teams that have been coming back for ten, fifteen, twenty years and doing this and we've been doing this for twenty five years," said Edwards. "Says a lot about how much they just really love tobogganing."

The weekend of trials brings several repeat racers including Doug Fagley who has made the trip up to Maine from Maryland every February for the last 15 years. One of his favorite parts of racing toboggans is designing and building his own sleds from home.

"The people are unbelievable. Felt like family when we get to the Maine line, it's one of the reasons I love coming up here," said Fagley.

The three day event helps raise money for the Camden Snow Bowl, a non-profit ski area in Camden.
