Nonprofit works to uncover mysteries behind Maine's snowy owls

Down East magazine profiles the nonprofit researching these fascinating creatures.

PORTLAND, Maine — There’s a lot we don’t know about snowy owls. They arrive in Maine in the fall, and then the questions begin.

"They may stay for a few months or disappear within days," Loren Merrill writes in the January issue of Down East. "Some winters only a handful of owls are seen; in others, hundreds appear."

Researchers with the nonprofit Project SNOWstorm have been tracking the movements of snowy owls in Maine and other states and Canadian provinces for several years, trying to answer some basic questions. Down East editor in chief Will Grunewald joined us on 207 to talk about the magazine’s story on Project SNOWstorm and its annual photo contest.
