PORTLAND, Maine — Angus King is one of the most popular politicians in recent Maine history. Elected twice to the Blaine House and twice to the U.S. Senate, he hasn’t faced a challenging campaign since his first run for governor.
King, who is 80, is now running for a third term in Washington against a Democrat, a Republican, and another independent. The Democratic Party has not waged a vigorous campaign against him because he caucuses with Democrats in the Senate and his views generally align with theirs.
Here’s a quick look at his background.
Residence: Brunswick
Work experience: Lawyer in private practice and with Pine Tree Legal Assistance in Skowhegan. Staff assistant to Maine Senator William Hathaway. Host of Maine Public TV public affairs program. Businessman who worked in the energy field and eventually founded his own energy conservation company. Lecturer at Bowdoin College and Bates College.
Political experience: Elected governor of Maine in 1994, re-elected in 1998. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 2008, and re-elected in 2014.
