Check out the stories behind the Portland Press Herald’s photos of the year

How did photographers capture these memorable images? Skill and experience are essential—and a little luck doesn’t hurt.

PORTLAND, Maine — For nearly a decade the Portland Press Herald has compiled a gallery of its most compelling photos of the year. And for nearly a decade, 207 has shared some of those images with our viewers and asked a couple of the Press Herald’s photographers to talk about when, where, and how the pictures were taken.

This year, chief photographer Greg Rec and staff photographer Ben McCanna sat down with us to discuss just some of the many photos in the collection.

If you’d like to see more of the photos—in person with large, high-quality prints that provide exceptional detail—you can do that at the Portland Public Library through Feb. 17. The photographers themselves will attend a free reception for the public at the library on Feb. 2 from 5-7 p.m.

The photo collection will then hit the road, moving to the Camden Public Library in March, Prince Memorial Library in Cumberland from April 2 to May 9, and Louis T. Graves Memorial Public Library in Kennebunkport from July 1 to July 30.
