Here are seven good hot sauces made in Maine

Joe Ricchio picks his favorites that bring both heat and flavor.

PORTLAND, Maine — When Joe Ricchio and I started kicking around ideas for his latest appearance on 207, I suggested we do something tied to the arrival of summer. In short, hotter weather, cooler foods.

Joe, a longtime food writer in Maine and the host of "Food Coma," had a different take.

"How about hot sauces?" he asked.

It’s counterintuitive, but hot, spicy food almost always comes from places known for their serious heat and humidity. After all, which country has more fiery food—Finland or Mexico? Russia or India? Canada or Thailand?

In keeping with that geographic-culinary connection, Maine is not renowned for its spicy foods. But Joe, without even breaking a sweat, quickly came up with seven hot sauces he likes, and each one is made here in the state. Watch our 207 interview to see his list.
