In a world where economic competition gets more intense all the time, Maine has a lot of disadvantages: high electric rates, tough winters, a graying population, and more.
But Maine has something that's always been a plus: a work ethic that most other states can only envy.
And if you want to see what kind of impact Maine workers can have in an industry where the global competition is fierce, we found the place: The New Balance factory in Skowhegan.
New Balance also makes shoes at factories in Norway and Norridgewock.
And it has two factories in Massachusetts.
These factories are the exception, though.
New Balance does manufacture most of its shoes overseas.
