For a Maine crime novelist, writing a chase story is 'a blast'

“I get my adrenaline pumping and I can sit there and pound away at the keyboard for hours,” the author said.

PORTLAND, Maine — Paul Doiron doesn’t want to reveal much when talking about the plot of “Pitch Dark,” the latest in his series of crime novels featuring Maine game warden investigator Mike Bowditch.

“It is a chase book, and Mike is the hunter. He is pursuing a fugitive,” Doiron said, choosing his words carefully. “I don’t want to give too much away. Let’s just say it’s somebody who’s trying to get back into Canada.”

Doiron nods in agreement at the idea that people like to read chase books and watch chase movies, and he becomes noticeably less reserved when talking about what it’s like to write a chase book.

“It is a blast,” he said. “I get my adrenaline pumping and I can sit there and pound away at the keyboard for hours.”

Those hours devoted to work clearly pay off. This is the 15th Mike Bowditch book in the past 15 years, and although he can’t quite believe the run he’s had, Doiron is grateful.

“I’ve had a great career,” he said, “and I’m lucky to be able to do what I do.”
