Here’s your chance to walk among the shadows at one of Maine’s oldest cemeteries

Want to be spooked? Educated? Entertained? This event might do all three.

PORTLAND, Maine — For anyone who enjoys Maine history, Eastern Cemetery is a place to savor. It dates back to the late 1600s, and since then some 7,000 people have been buried in its grassy confines on a gentle slope on Munjoy Hill. Oh, the stories it could tell.

Actually, some of those stories will be told this month as the nonprofit group Spirits Alive presents its annual “Walk Among the Shadows.” The event gives people the opportunity to stroll through the cemetery with a guide who both educates and entertains.

Lasting about 40 minutes as darkness settles over the graveyard, the tour leads visitors down paths with evocative names such as “Funeral Lane.” Sound a bit spooky? Well, it is, even though this isn’t specifically a Halloween event.

Wait a minute. If it takes place in the evening in a cemetery in late October but it’s not a Halloween event, then what kind of event is it? Watch our 207 interview for an answer to that question and more.
