How to protect yourself from the sun while still receiving the health benefits

Dr. Allyson Coffin stopped by the 207 studio to share tips on how to absorb the vitamins your body needs from the sun while also protecting yourself from it.

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine is forecasting its hottest week of the summer this week, and if you're looking to take advantage of the vitamin D but also want to protect yourself, Dr. Allyson Coffin has you covered.

Dr. Coffin is a local chiropractor and wellness expert based out of Yarmouth.

"Vitamin D has a multitude of things that it helps us with," Dr. Coffin said. "It helps with stress and anxiety, it helps you absorb nutrients a little bit better, and it's good for your bone health."

Coffin said most people in Maine have lower vitamin D levels, but there are plenty of ways to make up for those deficiencies. One way she suggests is by going outside between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and exposing your face, arms, or legs to the sun for just at least ten minutes. 

"That's all you need and your body will start to make vitamin D for you, which is amazing," Dr. Coffin said. 

Coffin also suggests wearing mineral-based sunscreen.
