Good Theater in Portland will soon raise the curtain in a new home

The hope is the space will become a cultural hub for the entire community.

PORTLAND, Maine — After more than 20 years on Munjoy Hill, Good Theater is on the move.

It will soon take up residence just a few miles away at Stevens Square Theater on what used to be the campus of Catherine McCauley High School.

The venue will provide ample free parking, no stairs, upgraded sound and lighting systems, and a theater where configuration can be changed to accommodate from 100 to 450 seats.

Theatrical productions will begin in the fall of 2025 after renovations to the building have been finished.

Good Theater executive director Gusta Johnson will oversee the operation and help book other, non-theatrical events in the space, everything from opera to dance to comedy.

“We’re really excited about it,” she said. “It’s going to be a really appealing space for a bunch of cultural organizations, and we see it’s going to be a cultural hub for Portland.”

Brian P. Allen, who co-founded Good Theater and has been its artistic director from the beginning, is looking forward to handing off administrative responsibilities to Johnson so he can focus on what he loves: directing shows.

Although Johnson is new to her job, the two know each other well because she has performed in several Good Theater productions and concerts that have given her the opportunity to show off her impressive singing voice.

“Every executive director should have a high C,” Allen said with a smile. “I think that should be a new rule.”
