BROWNVILLE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- There's a food pantry in Brownville where oats are on the menu and deer are the number one customers.
Richard McMahon has been feeding deer at the Brownville Food Pantry For Deer for the last 16 years. He starts in December and continues until the end of March. This year he stalked 14 tons of oats, feeding around 300 lbs of it a day.
"Basically the biggest joy for me is to watch all the deer frolic, enjoy themselves, be healthy and have a safe place to live," said McMahon.
He's had state biologist visit his home to make sure that his feed was adequate and that the deer weren't a traffic hazard. Once those were checked he was given the ok to feed the deer that have given him some of the best views of mother nature's performances.
"We've had two brothers here that grew up together," said McMahon. "I got a picture of them sparring together."
There are around 100 deer that showed up to feed at the food pantry this year. McMahon says that that's less than years past because of the mild winter that has allowed deer to find their own sources of food.
