Bowling alley closing after 77 years of candlepin

Colonial Bowling Lanes in Westbrook is closing its doors after 77 years of offering candlepin style bowling to locals.

WESTBROOK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- After almost eight decades of candle pin, Colonial Bowling Lanes in Westbrook is closing up shop.

The lanes have been a local hot spot for people living in the area who take advantage of its Monday night bowling leagues. Scott Burnham has been trying to get the highest score every week for the last 35 years.

"A lot of good memories here and a lot of good people I've met over the years," said Burnham.

Colonial has been owned by Kevin Sparks for the last 12 years. Around $14,000 in back taxes caught up with him this year and he decided to sell the business to pay off his debts. According to him the new buyer plans on turning the space into a warehouse.

"The sale itself will clear me up from everything and I can actually be myself again," said Sparks. "So many friends that I've met and I'm going to miss them all."

Colonial Bowling Lanes will be having its Last Shot Tournament on May 7 starting at 4:30 PM to end its 77 year run.
