With breathtaking visual storytelling, Banff Mountain Film Festival takes us to places we’ll never go on our own

It’s a lineup of movies shot from the deepest caves to the highest peaks.

PORTLAND, Maine — The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is back in Maine for the 22nd year. Over two nights—February 9 and 10—at the State Theater in Portland the festival presents a wide range of short films that tell stories of people, places, and sports, all with a mountain backdrop.

Over the years the films’ visuals, which were always strong, have gotten even more stunning. Much of the credit goes to improved technology. Drones, phones and GoPro cameras allow filmmakers to get to the deepest caves and the highest mountaintops and come back with footage that, twenty or thirty years ago, would have been unimaginable.

Tom Widing of the festival dropped by 207 to talk about this year’s films. Watch our conversation and, more important, watch some of the film clips. We think you’ll be impressed.
