Healing through music: A conversation with composer Chad Lawson

As Chad Lawson shared with Samantha York, he's hoping his music will connect with those who need it most.

PORTLAND, Maine — Before Chad Lawson became a successful composer, he was waiting tables in New York City and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Lawson compares his musical gifts to taking care of customers at a restaurant. Every table is different, just like every song has a different melody.

“Be it words, be it music, whatever we are putting our hands to, if you allow it, it will change generations you’re never even going to meet,” Lawson said. “Whatever craft we are putting our hands to, if we bring to the idea that this is not mine, and I’m going to create something beautiful just for the sake of beautiful and letting go of that, that’s the role I feel, me personally, should be playing.”

His latest album, "Where We Are," was inspired by real conversations he’s had with listeners on his Calm It Down Podcast. Lawson said he has found a way to weave his music in such a way it encourages listeners to breathe. He believes both are powerful tools to combat grief and find peace.

Lawson was in Maine for a workshop with MedRhythms in Portland.
