This comic-inspired artwork is raising money for Lewiston shooting survivors

"We've done a lot to support the victims, as we should, but there are a lot of amazing people out there that are survivors that did a lot," Cheryl Horton said.

AUBURN, Maine — During the past few weeks, we have watched as people around our state and the world have come together to support the Lewiston community.

One family at the center of that support is Jon and Kelly Sylvia.

The couple was enjoying a date night out together when a gunman opened fire at Schemengees Bar & Grille last month. Their two children were at home.

As soon as the shooter left, Kelly immediately started putting tourniquets on victims. Jon was shot but survived.

It was Kelly's act of heroism that inspired Cheryl Horton to organize an auction for the couple to raise money for medical bills and other expenses. Horton lost her brother, Billy Brackett, in the shootings. She said she has to do something good with her grief.

"We've done a lot to support the victims, as we should, but there are a lot of amazing people out there that are survivors that did a lot," Horton said. "I just always remember that saying always look for the helpers, and that was Kelly."

Ohio-based artist, Ron Moore Jr., donated four sketches to be auctioned for the cause. Three are comic-themed, and the other is a signed drawing of the Oakridge Boys.
