Maine author uses father's WWII letters as roadmap for new book

"From Fledgling to Flyer" was written by Mimi Gough, an author who lives in Portland.

PORTLAND, Maine — When was the last time you checked your attic, and rummaged through a box of old stuff?

In 2014, Maine author Mimi Gough finally weeded through her grandmother's old scrapbooks and boxes of military memorabilia that belonged to her late father. Joe Gough passed away when Mimi was only 14 years old. He died of cancer.

Mimi said reading through the letters her father sent home while serving in WWII gave her a better idea of who he was before he served and who he was while completing missions as a bombardier over the South Pacific.

In her new book "From Fledgling to Flyer," Mimi writes about feeling like her father was with her as she collected research for the story.

"Although feeling that original grief when I was 14 came back, I think on the other hand it filled that hole that was left by the experience," she said.

Mimi stopped by the 207 studio to share more about her father, her new book, and why she hopes others will find time to walk down their own family's memory lane.
