PORTLAND, Maine — If you are looking to do good this holiday season, why not give back to one of Maine's nonprofit organizations?
Jennifer Hutchins is the executive director of the Maine Association of Nonprofits. She stopped by the 207 studio to share more about the organization, Maine's nonprofit landscape, and how a small donation can make a big difference to these organizations.
"Nonprofits are all about communities coming together and helping each other," Hutchins said.
What is a nonprofit?
The simple answer is a nonprofit is a tax-exempt status. Which means the IRS has granted the organization permission to collect money from the public and not pay taxes on those donations. In exchange, the organization provides services to the community.
How many nonprofits are in Maine?
Maine is home to thousands of nonprofits. These organizations are tackling everything from climate change and affordable housing to preserving our libraries and creating more opportunities for the elderly.
Where can I learn more?
Hutchins recommends visiting the Maine Association of Nonprofits' website.
"There are many ways to support our nonprofits. Financial support at this time of year tends to be the most common way," Hutchins said.
