PORTLAND, Maine — This time of year, many of us suffer from dry skin. The air is drier, and our bodies often react to that. Dr. Allyson Coffin from Align with Wellness in Yarmouth joined 207 to share some tips for treatment.
According to Dr. Coffin, one of the main causes is dehydration, not just from lack of water, but also from eating a low-fat diet or lack of fruits and vegetables which contain more water.
Dr. Coffin suggests eating more foods with omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish, and many proteins to help hydrate your skin.
She also suggests using a moisturizer when you get out of the shower while your pores are open.
She points out there is a difference between dry skin and eczema. Eczema will present as dry patches in different areas of your body, whereas dry skin will be more flaky dry skin.
Dr. Coffin says if your dry skin or eczema is impacting your life, you’ll want to contact your doctor.
