BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Hope House Health and Living Center in Bangor depends on the work of its volunteers. Its youngest being 12-year-old Merissa Pomeroy.

There's no work at the Hope House that Pomeroy wont do. She's done everything from serve food in the cafeteria to fold towels and sheets in the laundry room. Housing Coordinator, Susan Reynolds, is thankful to have someone so young working beside her.

"Phenomenal what this young girl understands already about homelessness and the passion that she's showing to help others that are struggling, so she's been a joy to all of us here," said Reynolds.

Pomeroy's philanthropy doesn't stop after her volunteering shift is over. Through a fundraiser on Facebook, she was able to collect 236 pairs of socks for the homeless because of a story she heard from her church pastor about what helping the homeless can do.

"He donated a pair of socks to a homeless man and the man smiled like he got a million dollars and I wanted to do that so I just started collecting socks," said Pomeroy.

The 12-year-old plans on collecting toiletries such as toothpaste and shampoo next. She'll continue collecting socks even though she surpassed her goal of 200 pairs. To donate visit her page called Good Deeds For God on Facebook.
