BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Manna Ministries, a well-known social services provider in Bangor, is closing it’s faith-based drug and alcohol programs.
According to the non-profit’s facebook page, Manna Ministries attributes the closure to declining state funding and recent negative media attention.
Elijah’s House, a short term substance abuse rehab and Derek’s House, a long-term rehab facility, will both be closing their doors on June 15.
According to the organizations facebook page, “Even in light of the current drug crisis in Maine, available funding is not sufficient to support our programs. It was heartbreaking to tell our residents we could no longer offer the faith-based services they need. It is equally heartbreaking to displace all our valuable staff”.
Manna had fallen behind in its bills and the paperwork needed to run the non-profit. Manna owed the Department of Health and Human Services $1.3 million for overpayments it accepted from the state to run a drug treatment program in Medway that closed in 2013.
Manna also had several liens and other outstanding debts including $28,000 in storm water and sewer fees to the City of Bangor.
Manna ministries says their soup kitchen, food pantry and thrift store will remain open. They say their facility is for sale and plan to move to a smaller, less expensive building to lower costs.
