PORTLAND, Maine (Portland Press Herald/Joe Lawlor) — Maine Medical Center is proposing a sweeping $512 million expansion that will dwarf previous renovation and expansion efforts, increasing the physical footprint of the hospital by about 25 percent at its main campus.
A new 270,000 square-foot, glass-paneled building would face Congress Street, where a new main entrance is planned. The new entry would replace the main entrance currently off of Bramhall Street that is accessed by winding through a West End neighborhood.
The new building would be the cornerstone of the expansion, featuring 20 new operating rooms and 64 inpatient beds, and would be a commanding presence on Congress Street, Portland’s main thoroughfare.
