DHHS offering special enrollment period for those losing MaineCare eligibility

The special enrollment period through CoverME.gov will remain open through July 2024 for qualified applicants.

MAINE, USA — Mainers who are losing their MaineCare eligibility will now have more time to explore affordable health insurance options.

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday the launch of a special enrollment period through Maine's health insurance marketplace, CoverME.gov

Special enrollment began on Saturday and will extend through July 31, 2024, according to a news release from the Maine DHHS.

The move comes as MaineCare redetermines eligibility for current members, as required annually by federal law. MaineCare's renewal and eligibility process was put on hold in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but this year, it's starting back up again.

People found ineligible for MaineCare during this year's renewal process due to income or other reasons will reportedly have their information automatically transferred to CoverME.gov.

To avoid a gap in coverage, applicants don't have to wait for their current coverage to expire before applying.
