Real-time Maine coronavirus updates: Maine CDC reports two more outbreaks at facilities in Sanford

MAINE, USA — KEY MAINE CORONAVIRUS FACTS

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

The Maine CDC reported zero additional deaths of people with COVID-19, meaning the state death total remains at 134.

Of the 4,713 total COVID-19 cases in Maine, 4,244 are confirmed by test and 469 are probable.

429 Mainers have been hospitalized a some point during their COVID-19 illness.

4,086 Mainers have recovered from COVID-19.

Millinocket Outbreak Update

There are now 158 total cases of COVID-19 associated with a wedding in Millinocket on August 7. There have also been three people associated with the wedding who have passed away with COVID-19.  Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah said none of the people who passed away actually attended the wedding.

There are now 20 cases at Maplecrest Rehabilitation and Living Center in Madison, with eleven among staff members and nine among residents.

There are now 82 cases among people associated with the York County Jail. 18 cases are among staff members, 48 cases are among inmates, seven cases are family members of jail staff with confirmed infections, and nine are family members of jail staff with probable infections.

New Outbreaks

Two staff members and one patron of the Lafayette Club in Sanford have tested positive for COVID-19.

Four people associated with the American Legion in Sanford have tested positive for COVID-19. The facility recently hosted a reception following a funeral.

Closed Outbreak

Maine CDC has closed the outbreak at Sedgewood Commons, a nursing home in Falmouth. Dr. Shah said the facility experienced a total of 59 COVID-19 cases. Maine CDC closes outbreaks after there have been two separate incubation periods without a new case. In other words, Dr. Shah said a facility must go 28 days without a new case before an outbreak can be considered closed.

The Maine CDC reported an additional 15 cases of COVID-19 for a total of 4,701.

  • Total cases: 4,701
  • Confirmed cases: 4,230
  • Probable cases: 471
  • Deaths: 134
  • Total Hospitalizations: 427
  • Recoveries: 4,076
  • Case rate per 10,000 people: 35.1

Coronavirus, COVID-19 Background 

The official name for the coronavirus is “SARS-CoV-2” and the disease it causes is named “coronavirus disease 2019” or “COVID-19” for short. Coronavirus is a family of viruses, which can infect people and animals. The viruses can cause the common cold or more serious diseases like SARS, MERS, and COVID-19.

The CDC says symptoms of the coronavirus include fever, cough, difficulty breathing, and in some cases sore throat.

The CDC says there are simple steps to take to reduce the possible spread of COVID-19:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Stay home while you're sick and avoid close contact with others
  • The Maine Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is holding coronavirus briefings on Tuesdays and Thursdays with director Dr. Nirav Shah to keep the public up to date on the situation in Maine
