PORTLAND, Maine — Swimmers are set to make a significant impact in their community.
Audrey Cohen initiated the effort with the ambitious goal of raising $50,000 for the MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children's Hospital.
When Cohen's not at the pool, she's volunteering at Maine Medical Center. It was during her time there that the idea for the Swim-A-Thon came to life.
"I was talking with some of the ladies on the philanthropy team, and we were discussing ways to help out Barbara Bush Children's Hospital," she explained. "This swim-a-thon idea came up because I've been a swimmer all my life."
After months of planning, the event is finally here. This Saturday, June 8, swimmers will gather pledges for each lap they complete within a two-hour window.
"These swimmers are trying to swim 100 to 200 laps, so it adds up really quickly," Cohen said.
The event welcomes participants of all ages, whether you're an experienced swimmer or you need floaties.
Mae Davidowitz, a young swimmer, said, "My goal is 100 laps, and I hope I get there in two hours."
She was echoed by Max Monah-Wright, who is also aiming high: "I'm hoping for over 100."
The driving force behind this event is the desire to support children in need within their own community.
"I am really excited I get to do something I love, which is swimming, but also raise money for the kids at the hospital at the same time," Davidowitz said.
The initial goal is $50,000, and they have already secured $10,000, showing significant progress toward their target.
"You never know till you try, and that's the goal," Cohen said.
The event will take place Saturday, June 8, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Greely High School, followed by a community event starting at 10 a.m.
There is still time to sign up and participate. Whether you're swimming or cheering from the sidelines, every bit of support helps make a difference for the children at MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children's Hospital.
