SANFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A few concerned parents in the Sanford school district say their kids are downloading inappropriate content onto their school issued iPads, and officials aren't doing enough to stop it.
A Sanford parent recently complained to the district that the school-issued IPad given to her child had pornographic images on it and was used for sexting.
The Superintendent says rules and security measures are in place to keep students from accessing and storing inappropriate content, but every day, kids find a new way to skirt the system. Whether its using their smartphones as a hot spot to get around the school's restricted internet access, or downloading apps that can hide inappropriate pictures, all the changes are difficult for administrators to keep up with.
The Sanford school system is working to combat the problem by issuing stricter guidelines for students. App downloads will be heavily restricted, and teachers will check every IPad for illicit material.
The problem is, the school's reach only goes so far, so administrators are asking parents to do the same sort of computer monitoring to help keep kids out of trouble.
iPads are used in the classroom all the time, but officials are now wondering whether there is a need for students to take them home, or if they would be better off left at school. It's something school committee members will discuss at their upcoming meeting.
