ORONO, Maine — The small college town of Orono was bustling for move-in day Friday, as new students got settled in at the University of Maine flagship campus.
More than 1,000 students were welcomed during the school's "Maine Hello" event.
Dozens of volunteers, from returning students to faculty, helped students move in across campus.
The event is part their Week of Welcome experience to help get students settled in.
As the University of Maine moves in its class of 2028, it’s a bittersweet moment for students and parents as they prepare for the year ahead.
"I'm feeling really excited. I get to meet my roommate, meet some new people. I get to go to a football game tonight,” first-year student Emma Lindsey said.
“The feelings didn't really hit until I got here,” first year student Dasani Dupree said. “I was really nervous, but it felt welcoming, so I’m excited.”
For parents, it’s a mixture of emotions as they send their kids off to college.
“I have mixed feelings. I mean, I’m excited for him,” parent Alli Noonan said. "It’s going to be a great year, I’m sure, but of course as mom I’m sad and nervous.”
Leaders at the university said they are ready to welcome the new students.
“They're beginning their journey to greatness really, so if we can give people a sense of wholeness and connectedness, that's what their all about," Dean of Students Robert Dana said.
President Joan Ferrini-Mundy has advice for first-year students.
“Explore, try new things, don't be afraid to learn about new things that you never tried before, and take advantage of this wonderful university,” Ferrini-Mundy said.
With a warm welcome at their new home students are ready to take on their new journeys.
“I’m excited to be around more people and see how other people act and find my true identity,” first-year student Jayla Cuesta said.
"I just feel lucky to have this opportunity because I know a lot of people don't have the opportunity and I know it's going to lead me to a really bright future,” Lindsey said.
Classes for the fall semester are scheduled to start Sept. 3, with a whole list of Week of Welcome events including local music, laser tag, and more.
