MAINE, USA — A 2022 study from WalletHub ranked Maine among the worst states for teachers in the U.S.
The study compared the 50 states and Washington, D.C., across two areas, "opportunity and competition," as well as "academic and work environment."
"Because competitive salaries and job security are integral to a well-balanced personal and professional life, we assigned a heavier weight to the first category," WalletHub stated.
Out of 50 states and the District of Columbia, Maine ranked the eighth worst. New Hampshire ranked the second worst.
New York and Utah took the top two spots on the list.
WalletHub looked at data from several bodies, including the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Education, Learning Policy Institute, and more.
The study found teachers in New York and Illinois had the highest annual salaries adjusted for the cost of living. It also found Kentucky and Montana had the lowest rates of projected teacher turnover.
