CALAIS, Maine — The Maine Department of Health and Human Services has announced it is opening a new office in Calais.
The office will be located at 300 North Street, the Department said in a press release Thursday, June 27. DHHS has signed a 20-year lease for the 3,500-square-foot building, which will provide services for processing applications and renewing public assistance programs.
The building will house about 10 staff from the following departments:
- Office for Family Independence
- Office of Child and Family Services
- Office of Aging and Disability Services
- Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention
The facility is expected to open in October.
The previous DHHS office in Calais closed in October 2016. It had served about 21 clients a day.
The new facility will give the DHHS a full-time presence in Calais again.
Any employees transferred to the Machias office after the 2016 office closure will be given the option of returning to Calais. The Department also says it plans to hire additional employees.
