LINCOLNVILLE, Maine — Numerous firearms were seized, and a person of interest has been taken into custody during an investigation in Waldo County that invoked the yellow-flag law.

Waldo County dispatchers received a call early Monday morning about a man on 700 Acre Island who was reportedly seen wearing a ballistic vest and was last seen walking into the woods, Lt. Cody Laite with the Waldo County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. The person who reported it apparently expressed concern that the person may have been concealing firearms.

The sheriff's office responded to the area with aid from the U.S. Coast Guard and found a man on a skiff "traveling near the north end of the island." Officials said the man was cooperative and was not armed or wearing a ballistic vest, but he was brought to a medical facility for evaluation and treatment, according to the initial release.

The sheriff's office with support from the Maine Marine Patrol returned to the island Tuesday and Wednesday for further investigation but said there was "no concern for a threat to the public's safety."

Law enforcement officials with the sheriff's office returned to the island Thursday with aid from the agencies that included the U.S. Coast Guard and Maine Marine Patrol.

The investigation apparently utilized the yellow-flag law, which resulted in the seizure of multiple firearms during a search on 700 Acre Island relating to the initial call, Sheriff Jason Trundy said Thursday afternoon in an update.

One of the firearms was found by a civilian.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no criminal charges have been filed.
