PORTLAND, Maine — The Office of the Maine Attorney General has released video of a deadly shooting in Portland during its investigation into the incident on Sunday.
Portland police shot and killed Kyle Desmarais, 42, Sunday night on Interstate 295 in the area of southbound exit 2 after he and officers exchanged gunfire, according to a news release from the Portland Police Department.
Earlier that night, police were called about a report about an aggravated assault at approximately 11:40 p.m. where a handgun was reportedly displayed. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, according to the release.
Desmarais was pulled over by police on I-295, where police said he exited his vehicle and pointed a firearm at the responding officers. Desmarais was shot by the officers, who reportedly attempted first aid before he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Video released from the attorney general's office shows the encounter from four separate angles, including body and dashboard cameras, all showing the use of deadly force. More than a dozen shots can be heard, and it remains unclear who fired first.
Neither officer was injured in the shooting, but their cruisers were struck by bullets.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave as the attorney general's office investigates, as is standard procedure in police shootings.
