BRUNSWICK, Maine — Two people from Otisfield are facing charges following a police pursuit in Brunswick Sunday afternoon.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office notified Brunswick police to be on the lookout for a white Ford pickup truck that had reportedly fled a traffic stop in Bath, the Brunswick Police Department said in a news release.

At about 3:52 p.m., a Brunswick police officer spotted the truck driving south on Route 1 near Cooks Corner at a high rate of speed, according to the release.

"As the suspect vehicle approached traffic a vehicle ahead of it attempted to swerve out of the way resulting in that vehicle crashing and becoming entangled in the cable guardrail," the release stated. "The occupants of this vehicle were not injured."

The Ford pickup then attempted to swerve, but lost control and struck a guardrail a short distance away from the first vehicle, police said.

"The suspect vehicle then continued against the flow of traffic on Route 1, nearly striking the Brunswick officer and several other motorists head-on," the release said. "Based on the circumstances, Brunswick Police pursued the suspect vehicle to the intersection of Board Rd. and Woodward Point Rd. where the vehicle lost control and became stuck in the yard of a residence."

From there, the occupants of the pickup truck fled on foot. Police said the driver, identified as 46-year-old Darcia Thorpe of Otisfield, was apprehended at the scene. Thorpe claimed to have minor injuries and was taken to Midcoast Hospital for evaluation before being taken to the Cumberland County Jail without bail, according to police.

Police searched the area of the crash scene for the passenger, identified as 38-year-old Shane Maney of Otisfield.

At about 6 p.m., police received reports from several residents on Kimberly Circle about a man who had knocked on their door requesting to use a phone, the release said.

"Several officers had remained in the area and were able to respond immediately to the residence," the release stated. "Shane Maney was found hiding under a shed and was placed under arrest."

Thorpe had three prior sets of bail conditions, and was charged with the following:

  • Aggravated criminal mischief (Class C)
  • Two counts of criminal mischief (Class D)
  • Eluding (Class C)
  • Driving to endanger (Class C)
  • Motor vehicle speeding 30+ over the speed limit (Class E)
  • Leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident (Class C)
  • Refusing to submit to arrest (Class D)
  • Operating under the influence of drugs (Class D)
  • Violating conditions of release (Class E)
  • Unlawful possession of scheduled drug (Class D)

Maney also had prior bail conditions, and was charged with the following:

  • Refusing to submit to arrest (Class D)
  • Violating conditions of release (Class E)
  • Unlawful possession of scheduled drug (Class D)

He was released from the Brunswick Police Department on $300 cash bail.

The Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office and Bath Police Department assisted in this incident.
