THOMASTON, Maine — Police in Thomaston arrested a man on Friday who is accused of vehicle theft and burglary.

The Thomaston Police Department said in a news release 55-year-old David Atwood, who police describe as a transient individual, is accused of stealing a vehicle from the parking lot of the Lowe's store located on New County Road on Friday.

Witnesses reported Atwood leaving the vehicle after it had been returned to the Lowe's parking lot and fleeing on foot, police said.

The vehicle was returned to its owner who reported it was significantly damaged during the alleged incident and cash that was in the vehicle had gone missing, according to police.

Thomaston police arrested Atwood at a McDonald's restaurant and brought him to the Knox County Jail. Atwood faces three counts of theft, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, criminal mischief, and burglary charges.

Police said Atwood was subsequently identified as a suspect in an Enterprise car rental burglary and golf cart theft from the property.

Atwood was also interviewed by the state fire marshal's office as a person of interest "in the recent suspicious fires in the area," police said. An investigation is ongoing.
